If the name Doug Marcello sounds familiar, it should. He’s been updating you on, and breaking down, trucking legal issues around the country for years, and most recently, here on AL Trucking News. This week, he was honored by an industry that he has given his time and expertise to for most of his career.
The American Trucking Associations announced that Marcello, a shareholder with the law firm Saxton & Stump, has been awarded the J.R. “Bob” Halladay Award by the Trucking Association Executives Council (TAEC). It’s not a trophy handed out every year to whoever’s next in line. The TAEC only gives it out when the region hosting the annual meeting decides somebody has actually earned it.
A Familiar Byline With a National Reputation
Regular readers know Marcello’s work even if they’ve never met him. He’s written for us on the real problem with nuclear settlements, broken down how broker liability shifted after Montgomery vs. Caribe, and made the case that lawsuit abuse is quietly inflating the price of everything that moves by truck, which is to say nearly everything. A Lifetime of Answering the Phone
Ask Tony Bradley, president and CEO of the Arizona Trucking Association and TAEC’s chairman, what makes Marcello different, and he doesn’t talk about billable hours. He talks about the phone.
“Any time a state trucking association executive picks up the phone and asks for help, he’s there, no hesitation,” Bradley said. “His knowledge and leadership have made all of us better and more prepared, and his work helping shape public policy has left a lasting mark on this industry and the people who represent it.”
That’s the kind of reputation you can’t buy. You can only earn it, one late-night call at a time, for years.
From the Courtroom to the Shop Floor
Marcello is a trial counsel in 35 states, defending trucking companies from accident response through jury trials. He founded the transportation-focused firm Marcello & Kivisto before it joined Saxton & Stump in 2022, and he holds a commercial driver’s license (CDL) himself, which is why his writing reads like it comes from somebody who’s actually sat in the seat. A Dickinson School of Law graduate, he serves in leadership roles with the American Trucking Associations and the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association.
“I’ve always believed the trucking industry is built by people who show up, work hard, and look out for one another,” Marcello said of the honor.
“This industry has given me far more than I could ever repay, and I’ve simply tried to give back in whatever ways I could.”
An Award Named for a Man Who Set the Bar
TAEC created the Halladay Award in 1990, named for Bob Halladay, who started running the Kansas Motor Carriers Association in 1952 and spent the next several decades helping write the legislation that let trucking become the backbone of post-war American commerce. He joined ATA in 1965 and retired in 1990 as Senior Vice President of Federation Relations. Halladay passed away in 2012, but the award carries his name specifically because it’s meant for people who do the unglamorous work of holding state associations together.
