| The American Transportation Research Institute has released new research on causes and solutions for the current gaps in diesel technician training, recruitment and retention. Attracting new professionals to fill diesel tech and truck driving jobs is a leading mission of the Alabama Trucking Association (ATA). In recent years, ATA leaders have partnered with diesel technology programs across the state to raise awareness of the opportunities available to those seeking to enter the field of diesel technology and fleet maintenance. The Association has even created a marketing campaign, “My Trucking Future,” which utilizes personal storytelling from actual technicians and drivers who are building great-paying careers in trucking. ATA’s efforts in this space complement ATRI’s research, which highlights the critical role of qualified technicians in maintaining a safe and efficient trucking industry. Despite their importance, 65.5% of shops were understaffed in 2025, with an average of 19.3% of positions remaining vacant. The research synthesized findings from techs, shops, and training programs. Read more about ATRI’s new report here. In the meantime, trucking-related businesses can support our workforce development efforts by participating in a career day event and job recruitment fair in your community. For example, represent your company and the trucking industry at the 2025 Elmore County College + Career Day on Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the Wetumpka Civic Center. High school seniors from across the county will visit from 8:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to connect with local businesses. With up to 800 students expected, your organization can register for a table by August 27 using the link below. Space is limited, so register early! Register here. For those interested, ATA can provide My Trucking Future printed materials and swag for your recruiting efforts. Contact Susan Seymour for more information at sseymour@alabamatrucking.org. |
