The hunt is on for a mystery truck driver who helped save lives with his heroic actions on a busy stretch of I-70 in Madison County, Ill. last weekend.
Illinois State Police say a disoriented driver traveled three miles the wrong way on eastbound Interstate 70 in Madison County last Saturday afternoon. Cell phone video shows a truck driver intervened and helped get the vehicle stopped.
The van travelled the wrong way on I-70 east near State Route 4 when Cammi and Greg Pierce said they realized they were in danger. “My husband started honking, and I started waving my hands to try and get his attention,” Cammi Pierce told local television station KTVI (FOX 2).
The Pierces say they were almost hit before deciding to turn around and try to find a way to stop the van. Greg Pierce said the driver appeared to be having some kind of medical problem. “He was slumped over by his steering wheel. You can tell he was having some kind of medical problems or something,” he said.
The couple considered letting the van crash into their own vehicle, but suddenly the unknown truck driver jumped into action, quickly jumping from his semi, running up to the van, and opening the door to bring it to a stop.
The video shows the truck was hauling for Amazon, but the blue cab appears to be marked with the letters “JB.” No other identifying marks could be made out in the video. According to the report, there are several dozen companies with similar names registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Mr. Piece, whose wife, Cammi, shot the video, says the truckers’ actions were incredible and more than likely prevented costly damage and injury or possible fatalities.
“It was just really impressive that he had so much human compassion to jump out of his semi and risk his own life and run that van down and save that man from getting killed and possibly several others,” he said
The news station, along with witnesses and enforcement agencies, has reached out to multiple trucking companies and Amazon to identify the driver, but he has yet to be located.
