Gov. Kay Ivey announced last week more than $3.6 million in state funding for 11 road and bridge projects in cities and counties across Alabama.

The grants are the second round of funding awarded this year through the Alabama Dept. of Transportation’s Annual Grant Program, created under the Rebuild Alabama Act. The Legislature passed the act in 2019, and it requires ALDOT to set aside at least $10 million annually from the state’s share of gas tax revenue for local infrastructure projects.

“Strong, safe and reliable infrastructure is one of the reasons our state attracts record-breaking investments and jobs,” Ivey said in the announcement. “Rebuild Alabama is delivering lasting improvements, ensuring we have the strong transportation network needed to support our growing economy and those who drive our roads and bridges.”

Cities and counties contributed more than $1.5 million in local matching funds toward the 11 projects, bringing the total investment to more than $5.1 million. Projects must move forward within one year of the funding award.

The awarded projects include street resurfacing in Lineville, Samson, Gordon, Detroit, Winfield, Moody and Tallassee; a culvert replacement in Robertsdale; a bridge replacement over an unnamed tributary in Etowah County; drainage and resurfacing work in Owens Cross Roads; and full-depth asphalt paving in Washington County. Individual awards ranged from about $253,000 to $350,000.

Since the Rebuild Alabama Act took effect, ALDOT’s Annual Grant Program has awarded more than $81.8 million in state funding for local transportation projects. A third round of funding is expected later this year.
