The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has temporarily paused the inactivation of USDOT numbers for carriers that have missed their required biennial update since June 1, as the agency continues transitioning to Motus, its new USDOT registration system launched May 19.

FMCSA says the pause is intended to reduce disruption during the rollout and give registrants extra time to complete biennial updates without fear of losing their number due to Motus-related access or system issues. The agency says additional guidance will follow as stabilization efforts continue.

FMCSA says the Motus system is designed to streamline and modernize its motor carrier registration process, enabling entities to submit required information, update records and comply with federal regulations more easily and in one place.

It aims to improve safety oversight and data accuracy for the trucking industry. It will eventually replace systems such as the Unified Registration System (URS) and the agency’s Licensing & Insurance platform, consolidating functions into a single interface.

Carriers with urgent registration issues can reach the FMCSA Registration Customer Service Center at 1-800-832-5660 or submit a request through the FMCSA support webform.
