The Alabama trucking industry has always prioritized the safety of our drivers and the other motorist using our roadways. We’ve been on the forefront of proper load securement safety for many years but continued education and practice on proper load securement remains essential for keeping our Alabama roads safe and our companies profitable.
Improperly secured loads can lead to accidents, road hazards, cargo damage, and costly penalties, making it critical that drivers understand and consistently apply securement techniques. Regular education reinforces these practices, reduces liability risks, and promotes a culture of safety and professionalism within the transportation industry.
Drivers, motor carriers, and shippers all have responsibilities in assuring loading procedures are followed correctly per the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR’s). Considering all involved, the driver is the captain of the ship and is ultimately responsible for the securement of the cargo they are transporting.
Please note the following reminder points as we continue to raise awareness about this matter.
- FMCSR §393.100 (b) requires all cargo to be secured from leaking, spilling, blowing or falling from the motor vehicle.
- Tie downs, whether using chains, straps, ropes, binders, or any other qualified materials used to secure cargo, must meet standards according to FMCSR requirements set forth in §393.108.
- Loads must be inspected for proper securement at point of origin, after 50 miles, and every 3 hours or 150 miles thereafter.
- Consider weather factors such as major temperature changes from point to point.
- Upon any hard braking event or evasive maneuvers, stop and inspect your securement as soon as it is safe.
- During meal stops and after rest breaks, inspect your loads for any shifting or loose equipment.
- When in doubt, stop and check it out!!!
All drivers, motor carriers, and shippers should take this opportunity to see that load securement procedures, practices, and regulatory guidance are followed completely and without exception.
