ALDOT advises drivers to use caution during construction on I-10 in Mobile

The Alabama Dept. of Transportation has planned a pair of construction projects on Interstate 10 in Mobile, Ala., starting this weekend and will continue for several months until the projects are completed.

Commercial drivers should use caution and expect reduced speed limits, delays and possible reroute. Please review the following information and share it with your drivers, staff and anyone else who uses this interstate corridor.

I-10 Bridge Widening – AL Exit 10 to Exit 15

ALDOT’s project to widen approximately 4.8 miles of I-10 is scheduled to begin on Sunday night, Sept. 19 at 9 p.m. and continue through the following Thursday morning at 5 a.m. This work will continue until the project is completed, which is expected to be completed by May 2024.

The construction zone extends from the Exit 10/CR-39 Interchange (McDonald Road) to the CR-69 (Plantation Road) Overpass, just west of Exit 15 in Mobile. While the project allows for restricted, alternating lane closures Sunday through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. as needed for certain phases of the project, daily lane closures to perform the work are not anticipated for the complete duration of the project.

Drivers should note that there will be no usable shoulders within the specified one-mile active work zones, and drivers should expect a narrower roadway. Also, the speed limit will be reduced to 55 MPH as well through the work zone.

 I-10 Wallace Tunnel Resurfacing

On Monday night, Sept. 20, ALDOT will begin work to resurface the George C. Wallace Tunnel on Interstate 10. This project includes restricted, alternating lane closures Sunday through Thursday nights from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. While this work is performed all vehicles wider than 8 ft. will receive messaging to detour around the work zone. This project is estimated to be completed by late November 2021.

NOTE: Eastbound detour traffic will utilize Exit 20 (I-65N) and Exit 26B (Water St) and use I-165 to the US 90 Causeway, and Westbound detour traffic will use Exit 27 to the US 90 Causeway.
