ATA supported state gas tax bill passes first hurdle

The Birmingham News (al.com) is reporting that a bill to increase Alabama’s gasoline and diesel tax by 4 cents a gallon this year and two cents a gallon in 2019 was approved by a House committee today.

The Alabama Trucking Association supports the tax increase because the money raised is pledged to road and bridge work. Counties and cities would get half the revenue for local road work, while the other half would go to the state for projects chosen by the Alabama Department of Transportation.

Today’s approval by the Transportation, Utilities and Infrastructure Committee moves the bill into position for consideration by the House.

The committee approved a similar gas tax last year but it did not pass the House.
